At Waracle we live and breathe all things mobile and IoT! Whether it’s app development, app store optimisation (ASO) or app marketing, we’re working with some of the largest companies in the world, some of which, like ourselves, are headquartered in Scotland. When it comes to technology and innovation, there’s no doubt that Scotland is very successful. We want to congratulate companies headquartered in Scotland for having had some of the top mobile apps developed! We’ve been researching Scottish apps in order to satisfy our own nerdy fascination with apps and all Scottish sectors and our initial research brings you the first edition of the Scottish App Stars 30 (#SAS30).
Just like the rules of the famous BBC TV programme, Top of the Pops (TOTP), we’re going to end with the number one app in Scotland – The Scottish App Star! We’ll countdown Scottish apps over the next three weeks. Make sure you subscribe to the Waracle blog and catch parts 2 and 3 to hear which company in Scotland has the top ranked App.
Before we get into the chart countdown, you might be interested in some overall stats about the top Scottish apps and our analysis of what this means for Scotland. Just like Scotland’s top technology driven sectors, there’s a strong correlation with the top 30 mobile apps.
The remaining top apps are a mix of comics, entertainment, productivity, social, sports and tools.
Of course many Glasgow companies feature. It’s no surprise that the majority of the companies with apps are headquartered in Edinburgh, especially with the startup incubator Codebase supporting the development of many of the country’s technology companies and CodeClan and The DataLab helping skill the population. Kudos must go to Jamie Coleman, Owner and Chairman of Codebase for creating this tech incubator since almost 20% of the #SAS30 apps are a result of Codebase companies. As the Scottish Government knows, Scotland certainly has its fair share of ambitious entrepreneurs and a lot of the companies are also part of ScotlandIS, the trade body for Scotland’s ICT industry, and Technology Scotland developing the Key Enabling Technology (KET) sectors in Scotland.
Close to our roots, Dundee companies are heavily featured in the top 30. Dundee’s history in journalism is now turning publications into apps. And, the Dundee Waterfront project is ensuring Dundee remains a creative city with groups such as Creative Dundee supporting new and established talent. Indeed last year, Dundee was listed as a top technology city!
So, here’s the bit you’ve been waiting for, ranked purely in alphabetical order, top of the apps Scotland countdown 30-21…

Our Scottish App Stars 30 Chart is based on our app store research for companies with apps who have their corporate headquarters in Scotland. Typically, apps with a good number of downloads have generally been ranked highly in the app stores due to their good focus on App Store Optimisation (ASO) and app marketing resulting in good ratings and reviews too. We know there’s a lot more goes into the app store algorithm but on the basis of installs, it’s a pretty impressive chart for Scottish Apps!
Congratulations to all companies featured in the Scottish App Stars 30 – you’re doing a good job ensuring people discover and download your app!
With millions of mobile apps in the app stores, there will be plenty additional apps which are not in the top 30 and that’s understandable. Getting an app discovered is one of the biggest issues facing mobile app marketers today. You can own an amazing app from the best mobile app developer in the land, but you need to make sure it’s discovered and known for its benefits, to drive installation. There are lots of techniques when it comes to app marketing but one very important technique guaranteed to generate more app downloads is App Store Optimisation or, ASO, as we like to call it! ASO is quite simply a way of optimising mobile apps to rank higher in app store search results and therefore be more visible to potential downloaders.
Search, in app stores, is the most used method for discovering and downloading new mobile apps. Basically, if you don’t use ASO to increase your app’s search ranking, you’re ignoring the largest discovery channel available to your app. It’s estimated that 63% of all apps are discovered via the app store search function, or via browsing the app store (App Tweak).
So, to get your app ranking more highly in the app stores and increase downloads, then check out our 5 steps to app store domination – using ASO. Follow these 5 steps and you should start to see your app rise up the app store rankings and your app downloads increase.
Or, if you like, we’ll do the work for you! Just contact Waracle App Optimisation team and we’ll do a quick assessment of your app. We’ll provide you with a free trial of our App Store Insights report giving you with a high-level view of the performance of your app. The App Store Insights report lets you see how your app compares to competitors’ apps and how it’s ranked for key search terms over time.
