Mobile as a megatrend and why desktop is dead

10th January 2014

It took Radio 38 years to reach 50 million people. Facebook took 3.5 years to reach an equivalent audience. Instagram, the photo sharing platform, reached an audience of 50 million within 6 months. Angry Birds took only 30 days to touch the same audience.

Everyday there are more smartphones activated than there are babies born in the world. This statistic was recorded in 2012 and the explosive growth of mobile has continued on a steady upward trajectory. The news is not good for desktop software developers – their lunch is being eaten quickly by sales of smartphones and tablets. The number of Internet mobile devices sold worldwide is already greater than the number of PC’s sold. Tablets alone will overtake sales of desktop PC’s in the next 2 years.

“Your business needs to skate where the puck is going, not where it has been”  Chris Martin, CEO, Waracle

So what is it about mobile? The mobile computing experience enables deeper engagement with the world that surrounds us. We watch on-demand TV on tablets whilst using Twitter to comment about the show. We use smartphones in physical retail outlets to compare prices and assess alternative suppliers. Back in the good old days, we used to ‘go online’ to surf the web. Nowadays we are constantly connected through mobile.

Waracle is the longest standing mobile development, mobile web and mobile marketing agency in Scotland.  We’re 100% committed, focused and ‘tooled up’ to do ‘mobile first’ as opposed to software developers and marketers ‘anchored’ in desktop. We’ve developed mobile apps for some of the UK’s biggest brands. We’ve worked with the likes of Imperial College London, the NHS and Virgin Atlantic. If you’re a business looking to take those first steps into mobile, contact us directly today.
