Some of the first things we consider with web development projects are the basics of SEO; the foundations that underpin all search engine rankings by affecting the visibility of a site to the search engines. Choose your keywords or key phrases carefully, these are what potential customers are likely to search for in order to find your site. This integral SEO process is often overlooked in web development, so read on to demystify SEO and improve your placement in organic search results.
The contents of your page’s title tag is one of the single most important factors for ranking in the search results. Not only is it the title of the tab and the browser window, it is also the first line people see in any search results. Keep the title between 60 to 70 characters as this is the most that Google will display when listing results and search engines put more weight on the early words as people scanning result pages will see these words first and be more likely to click through.
The actual web address of the page shows up second in search results. Make sure the keywords appear here if the page is not your homepage as this reinforces to the search engines that the content is relevant to the searched query.
Search engines give the words used in headings more weight when determining the contents of a page. The keyword your page is optimised for should appear at least once in an h1 tag, and related keywords should be used in the other headings throughout the rest of the content.
The content or body of the page should reflect the same ideas and concepts as the previous 3 points. The keywords should appear repeatedly throughout the text. The keyword density should sit between 1% and 3% meaning that if you have one keyword in a 300 word page, it should appear 3 to 9 times. It is important that the keywords are present in the first paragraph of the text showing the search engines relevancy to the searched term. As a general rule pages should contain a minimum of 300 words and for ease of reading should be no longer than 500 words.
Like the adage says ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’. Images add meaning to a page and should have HTML attribute tags attached to them. The most important being the alt attribute which describes what the is happening in the image. Search engines such as Google will crawl these attribute tags and consider them when ranking your webpage.
The meta description is essentially a summary of what the page is about. It is limited to 156 characters and shown along with the date that the page was published in googles search result listings. Again, make sure that they keywords appear in the meta description.
So there you have it, the basics of SEO. Pick your keywords and make sure they are present throughout these 5 areas. The search engines will reward you for your relevancy to your chosen topic and place you higher in the search results. It is also important to implement a content plan which we covered in our previous blog. In the coming weeks we’ll touch on other important factors concerning SEO such as social media engagement.
