WWDC 2018: What you need to know!

6th June 2018

If you didn’t have time to watch the Apple Keynote on 4th June, here’s everything you need to know, brought to you by our team of mobile app developers at Waracle UK. Our teams love staying one step ahead when it comes to technology and had organised WWDC themed beer and pizza nights in each of our offices! What better way for Apple fans to hear the Keynote than on the big screen with their developer colleagues.

This year’s WWDC was all about software. There weren’t any new Mac announcements, nothing about HomePod or iPhone but there was plenty to get our team of app developers excited! Apple’s upcoming operating systems are going to deliver a host of welcome improvements and new features when they release later this year and we look forward to incorporating them into our clients’ mobile apps.

In summary, here’s what was announced at Apple’s WWDC 2018 keynote presentation:

  • iOS 12
  • watchOS 5
  • macOS Mojave
  • tvOS

iOS 12

iOS 12 is designed to make the iPhone and iPad experience even faster and more responsive.  The exciting new features will definitely be working their way into our clients’ iPhone apps! Apple is rolling out iOS 12 with emoji, Memoji, improved notifications and AR features, and more.

Siri Shortcuts

iOS 12 introduces Siri Shortcuts, enabling Siri to work with any app, delivering a much faster way to get things done, and evidence that voice control is the future.  The power and flexibility of Shortcuts is definitely its biggest selling point.  And, because Siri can figure out where you might benefit from automation, it can suggest creating shortcuts and expose the option to add actions to Siri from within apps. What this means, as mobile app developers, is that we can create the possibility of a shortcut to a certain function of an app, but then it’s up to the user to decide what should invoke that function – which is pretty cool!

The thing which most excited Waracle was the ARKit2 announcement. ARKit 2 makes it possible for developers, like us, to create more immersive augmented reality experiences — even ones that multiple people can experience simultaneously.

AR objects can now be sent with Messages and Mail, then viewed in the real world. And a new AR app in iOS called Measure helps you measure real-world objects just by pointing your camera at them!

If you’re interested in learning more about augmented reality for your business, why not contact Waracle today? AR technology is already being deployed across a number of industry sectors including retail, construction and oil and gas.

watchOS 5

Wearables are an everyday part of life now for most people. Just look at their use for activity competitions with your friends, workouts etc. At Waracle, we’re seeing the huge benefits of wearables when it comes to digital health and we keep a keen eye on new wearable announcements like this. With watchOS 5, you can do even more with your Apple Watch so if you are interested in finding out how your app could be used on the Apple Watch, contact us today.

On a side note, our team can imagine a lot of fun with Walkie-Talkie – the fun new feature to have one to one conversation through your Apple Watch.

And on the voice control front, no more “Hey Siri”: If you enable “raise to speak” you can just lift your watch to your mouth and tell Siri what to do without saying “Hey Siri” first!

macOS Mojave

Using a Mac has always inspired great work – just look at the number of Macs in the Waracle office! Now macOS Mojave brings new features such as Dark Mode, File Stacks and more. Apple made it clear: it is not going to combine iOS and macOS. The next version of Apple’s computer OS, macOS Mojave (10.14), has plenty of new desktop-exclusive features and we’ll be using these while developing apps for our clients.

Apple TV 4K lets you watch movies and shows in amazing 4K HDR — and this autumn, it completes the picture with immersive sound from Dolby Atmos.1 It streams your favorite channels live. Has great content from apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and ESPN.2 And thanks to Siri, you can control it all with just your voice. Just another indicator that voice control is the future.

What’s the business impact of WWDC 2018?

Every year the Apple Keynote is eagerly anticipated globally, however our team probably get that bit more excited.  At Waracle, we often arrange meetups and the team made good use our our large screen to watch the live keynote and debate the benefits of the upcoming releases.  WWDC 2018 gained the usual attention but sometimes you just need a summary of how these features are likely to affect your business. When you digest the announcements above, it’s important to think about their impact on your business. Have you yet to develop a mobile offering?
