Mobile App Development

Life changing digital healthcare projects

1st February 2018

In our recent interview with Business Matters, we tell Ian Forsyth why Waracle’s digital healthcare projects could be life changing!  But first of all, we gave him a bit of history about Waracle and many of the cool things our developers are working on this year.

Now one of the UK’s largest mobile app development, internet of things and digital solutions companies, Waracle, is based in Dundee. It began as a 2008 spin-out from Abertay University by Michael Romilly and Mike Wharton.

Dundee has a strong contingent of technology companies and a lot of gaming expertise, so the original aspiration was to create a gambling and gaming mobile app and web company. In 2013, new chief executive Chris Martin brought a wealth of software development experience and the business then moved into mobile app development and internet of things.

Waracle became the first company to develop an app for the Scottish Government as part of its Love Food Hate Waste programme. Following on from this, the client base grew to include Imperial College London and NCR.

In December 2015, Waracle became part of Edinburgh-based IT consultant Exception. This enabled Waracle to grow faster, hire further talent and grow the mobile app development team and move into additional digital solutions.

Business development director David Romilly said: “We feel we operate on a different plane to other mobile operators in Scotland.  We’ve elevated ourselves out of ‘we’ll develop you an app for you business’ to ‘we can take on a whole programme of mobile work to customers who use your app around the world’.”

Waracle’s workforce has expanded in the last decade to around 100 people. About half are in Dundee and the rest are based in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. Creating Mobile Web, iOSAndroid, Hybrid, Native, Internet of Things (IoT), Voice and Augmented Reality (AR) mobile apps for Clydesdale Bank, ScottishPower/Iberdrola, Sainsbury’s Bank, NHS, Scotrail, Scotmid, Peak Scientific, Waracle is a trusted digital transformation partner.

Digital Healthcare

The team in Tayside consists of all of the core operations of finance, HR, marketing, and sales and development including quality assurance.  The company’s healthcare projects all operate out of Dundee and there’s a large team of developers dedicated to digital health.  Some of the digital healthcare projects are literally life changing. We work alongside leading pharmaceutical, dental, research and health organisations to develop mobile apps and technology for wearable devices – mainly smart watches and adapted fitness trackers.

Chief executive Mr Martin, who was recently chosen as one of the 100 Faces of a Vibrant Economy by Grant Thornton, said: “As well as unwrapping the opportunities that mobile brings, we help customers unlock a completely new way of working.”

We are also expanding more into voice control, smart homes and mobile health. Read more in our interview with Business Matters. If you would like to learn more about other trends affecting mobile app development, download one of our free whitepapers on mobile trends and mobile marketing.
